About Southwest Forestry University

Southwest Forestry University is the only independent forestry university in western China. It takes forestry, forestry engineering, landscape architecture as its traditional advantages, biology, environmental science and engineering as its characteristics, and the coordinated development of disciplines such as science, engineering, agriculture, literature, law and management. It is the national education and training plan for outstanding agricultural and forestry talents, the education and training plan for outstanding engineers, and the supporting institutions for basic capacity building projects of central and western universities.

The school originated from the Forestry Department of Yunnan University in 1938 and was founded in Kunming Agriculture and Forestry College in 1958. In 1973, the Department of Forestry of Kunming Agriculture and Forestry College merged with Beijing Forestry College, which moved south to Kunming, to establish Yunnan Forestry College. After Beijing Forestry College moved back to Beijing to run a school in 1978, the school was changed to Yunnan Forestry College, which was directly under the management of the former Ministry of Forestry. In 1983, it was renamed Southwest Forestry College, one of the six regional forestry undergraduate colleges directly under the Ministry of Forestry. In 2000, the school was changed from a university directly under the former State Forestry Administration to a central and local co-construction, with the province as the main management. In 2010, it was renamed Southwest Forestry University.

Schools actively adapt to the needs of economic and social development, constantly adjust and optimize the college structure, At present, there are forestry colleges (Asia-Pacific forestry college), materials science and engineering college, garden and horticulture college, life science college, ecology and environment college, civil engineering college, biodiversity conservation college, big data and intelligent engineering college, mechanical and transportation college, geography and eco-tourism college, wetland college, mathematical college, chemical engineering college, Marxism college, grammar college, economic management college, accounting college, foreign language college, College of Art and Design, Art Museum, Institute of Physical Education, College of Continuing Education (Vocational and Technical College, Agricultural and Forestry Cadre College), International College, Graduate School (Graduate Department) and other 23 teaching units.

At present, there are 22,900 full-time undergraduate students, 3,312 postgraduate students and 166 doctoral students. There are 1,275 faculty members, 129 professors and 265 associate professors among full-time teachers. The school attaches great importance to teaching and now has 82 undergraduate majors, including 3 national first-class specialty, 4 national outstanding agricultural and forestry talents training programs, 3 national outstanding engineers training programs, 5 provincial specialty, 4 national first-class specialty construction points and 19 provincial first-class specialty construction points. Won 1 second prize of national teaching achievement award, 7 first prizes of provincial teaching achievement award and 19 second prizes. More than 400 provincial and ministerial quality engineering projects have been approved, and 12 provincial and ministerial practice teaching demonstration centers have been established. “Basic Experimental Teaching Center for Forestry Major” was approved as a national experimental teaching demonstration center, and “Southwest Forestry University-Zijinshan Forest Farm Science Comprehensive Practical Education Base of Chuxiong Forestry Bureau” was approved as a national off-campus practical education base for college students. There is one Huang Danian-style teacher team in national universities, one Huang Danian-style teacher team in provincial universities, and three new agricultural research and reform practice projects and one new engineering research and practice project approved by the Ministry of Education. The “Ten Ones” project was implemented to encourage college students to actively participate in professional skills competitions and scientific and technological innovation activities. Students achieved excellent results in the “internet plus” College Students’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the National College Students’ Structure Design Competition, the National College Students’ Mathematical Modeling Competition and other competitions. The School Pioneer Park was rated as the provincial youth entrepreneurship demonstration park, and the forestry campus entrepreneurship platform was recognized as the provincial campus entrepreneurship platform and the KAB entrepreneurship education base for college students. The school has been rated as a typical experience university of innovation and entrepreneurship for college graduates in Yunnan Province and the first demonstration university of innovation and entrepreneurship education in Yunnan Province.

It is the first batch of master’s degree awarding units approved by the State Council. It has the right to award doctor’s degrees. There are three post-doctoral research stations in forestry, forestry engineering and landscape architecture. It is a university that recommends outstanding undergraduate graduates to study for postgraduate studies without examination. There are 3 doctoral programs in first-class disciplines, 13 master programs in first-class disciplines, 66 master programs in two disciplines, 8 professional master programs, 6 key disciplines of the State Forestry and Grassland Bureau, 1 cultivation discipline, 5 provincial key disciplines, 2 provincial key construction disciplines with advantages and characteristics, 2 cooperative consulting and co-construction disciplines between provinces, colleges and universities, 1 A-class peak discipline, 2 B-class peak disciplines, 1 research direction of advantages and characteristics of B-class peak disciplines, and A-class plateau. There are 3 provincial-level authorization points for academic doctoral degree in cultivation and construction, 5 authorization points for academic master degree in cultivation and construction and 4 authorization points for professional master degree in cultivation and construction.
