China News, July 6, a Vietnamese PhD graduate from the School of International Relations of Renmin University of China (RUC), said in a recent interview with China News that in recent years, China’s scientific and technological innovation has attracted wide global attention and promoted the development and progress of the world.

In 2017, Hoang Thi Hanh Trang, who was fascinated by the unique charm of Chinese culture, came to China to pursue postgraduate studies at the School of International Relations of Renmin University of China. After six years of study, Huang Xingzhuang received his Master’s degree in International Relations in June 2019 and his PhD in Diplomacy in June 2023, and as a representative of international students, he spoke at the graduation ceremony of Renmin University of China.

Huang Xingzhuang said that over the years, studying and living in China has not only allowed her to significantly improve her personal skills, but has also given her a deeper understanding of the Chinese people, Chinese culture and modern Chinese society. At the same time, while she was in China, she was able to introduce Vietnam to friends around the world.

“In just a few decades, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, China has created many miracles of economic and social development. The CPC’s adherence to and development of the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, advancing and expanding Chinese-style modernization, has been the key to China’s ability to succeed.” Talking about China’s development over the years, Huang Xingzhuang lamented.

In Huang Xingzhuang’s view, China has undergone tremendous changes and made great achievements in recent years, gradually ranking among the world’s powerhouses. “In terms of the examples I have come across in my life, technological innovations such as high-speed rail, mobile payment, e-commerce and bike-sharing have attracted worldwide attention.”

According to Huang Xingzhuang, China’s tremendous changes have also driven the world’s development and progress. “The Belt and Road Initiative actively promotes policy communication, facility connectivity, smooth trade, financial integration and people-to-people contact, creating new opportunities for the common development of all countries. She believes that for developing countries like China and Vietnam, the Belt and Road Initiative can be an effective framework for sustainable development.

In addition, Huang Xingzhuang mentioned that China’s education sector has also made many outstanding achievements in recent years. “This is not only reflected in the rising ranking of some Chinese universities, but also in the determination of the Communist Party and the Chinese government to develop education with special characteristics.” She believes that more and more Vietnamese students are now choosing to study in China, as she did, which will bring more opportunities for educational cooperation between Vietnam and China.

I have always felt that people who decide to study in China are wise. China has been known to be a major influencer in international affairs and global economics. So many people find it an invaluable place to study in. The endless natural beauty, diverse culinary scene, complex history, and deep value for performance and visual arts were among the many highlights that made me desire to study in China. The only thing that I was uncertain about was the language but I was ready to learn it.

The Chinese language has been a great concern when it comes to studying in China for many international students as Mandarin is seen as one of the hardest languages to learn for those who are new to it. But, I later came to learn that it is not necessary to know the language for you to study in China and that there are essentials that a person who has scanty Chinese language skill need to know before departure to have the best experience possible.

In this article, I encourage international students that their journey to study in China should be unstoppable given that the Chinese language is not a prerequisite for them to study in China. This is because in major Chinese cities, classes are taught in English, and international students can study in China in English.

Most important is to know which city is best for primarily English speakers and directly enrolling in the universities of the region. I found out that the English-based learning exchange was prevalent in China’s larger cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. Here, there are well-robust opportunities for international students and there is a greater number of Chinese universities with many international students to communicate to. For me, I had chosen Nanjing University. Even if it is not found in these major towns, it offered some programs in English and so I could communicate in English with other international students though I had much interest in learning Chinese also. For those students who are fascinated by Chinese history, Beijing should be their choice as it is an ideal home living among relics of the past and having the advantages of the present at the same time. Choosing Beijing city means one has to go to either Peking University or Tsinghua University to study in China in English.

For those international students who desire something more modern, Shanghai should be their choice as it is the heart of modern China and the country’s largest city. It is also great for those who plan to pursue a degree in finance, business, or economics.  In this city, you find Shanghai Jiao Tong University- the most prestigious research university in the country with an enormous international student population. Another alternative is Fudan University which is a famous Chinese university for being one of the first schools to accept international students in the country in the 1950s with top-notch intensive Mandarin programs for those interested to learn the language.

Hong Kong is another modern capital that attracts international students who want to study in China. It has a great food landscape, plenty of English-taught courses, and an extensive variety of different cultural influences. Hong Kong University is the region’s oldest institution and is known for its excellence in research. But if an international student is interested in enrolling in beginner Mandarin classes, the university’s official language is Cantonese instead.

The other thing to understand to have the best experience as you study in China even with scanty Chinese language skills is that you can learn in English in China through an expert program provider. Moving to China without knowing the Chinese language can cause anxiety but with proper individual preparation beforehand, the transition can be made easier. Speaking to alumni of Chinese universities about their experiences can dispel the fear of not knowing the Chinese language. I helped those who planned to study in China to understand that the Chinese language is a must as there are universities in various Chinese cities that teach in English. I also made them aware of the existence of program providers that offer housing, translation services, and other logistics that help international students settle easily. They also got to understand that they have enough time to learn the Chinese language while that study in China. This way, they can keep an open mind for successful experiences both inside and outside of the classroom.

With scholarships, one can get financial aid, educational benefits, career help, and personal rewards. To an international student, this can be a huge relief enabling him/her to study in China cheaply. In my case, I understood that my career required more than two years and this was to have financial implications and so I felt that a scholarship was to be a desirable form of financial aid. So when it came, I knew that all the financial barriers on my way had been removed. It paid for my education and some living expenses leaving me with more time for studying and learning. I also realized that earning a merit-based scholarship can make you a more attractive candidate as employers recognize it as an accomplishment making you stand out during job searches. I can testify to this and I usually advise students to put more effort into their education, participate in athletes and community services to earn such scholarships, and study cheaply in China as with full-paid scholarships, all the study and living expenses are catered for. Apart from scholarships, still, some ways can enable international students to study cheaply in China as discussed below.

Transportation for the international study is another aspect that needs to be considered and planned for as one plans to study in China. Public buses, subways, and taxis are the major transportation in the cities. For students on a budget, public buses and subways are the most appropriate to save money. I remember seeing friends buy a transportation card to get at least a 30% discount on buses and subway fares but of course, this applied to certain cities such as Xi’an, Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou. Others could use an electric bike-sharing program. Therefore, for international students, it is up to you to choose the arrangement that can lower your costs in a great way.

Hotels are another expensive part. Those hotels found in inner cities or near travel stations and attractions are more expensive. So in this case, hostels can be cost-saving for an international student who is new and wants to live within the budget. Of course, they can’t be as good as those in hotels but they are clean and cheap. For me, I considered an apartment after a few months. I had made enough friends and so we opted to rent an apartment as a group as a washing machine and kitchen wares were provided enabling us to save on laundry and meals.

Another way an international student can study cheaply in China is by visiting free attractions. Many good museums are free to enter and offer good places for students to learn the culture and history of China. Also, shopping malls, markets, city squares, and parks are free and the best places to learn and experience Chinese daily life. Going around these markets, I learned that bargaining was another form of saving as I could buy food items cheaply. I was not afraid to ask for the best deal but I always kept in mind that their business was their livelihood too.

The other thing that can help many international students to study cheaply in China is by doing part-time jobs. At first, it can be challenging but as you get used, you can earn extra coins to make your study cheap as you can afford to live comfortably and even support your family. For me, article writing enabled me to earn some money which helped me support my siblings back home and meet my other needs. Similarly, I learned how to use Apps like Weixin to manage my money as most people used it for messaging and developing social networks. It also offered a wallet function that allowed me to send money to other users directly from my account without hassle.

Peking-Duck

My first meal in China is still fresh in my mind-a Peking duck which is a famous dish from Beijing and is regarded as one of China’s national dishes. In a Chinese restaurant in my homeland, Peking-duck was cherished for its thin and crispy skin. So when I arrived in China, I was directed to a restaurant where I ordered sliced Peking duck served with pancakes. I could not afford to be a black sheep in a foreign land even if I was a bit nervous. My prayer was that it settles peacefully in my tummy as I was in a new territory. Since I heard stories that it is a must-taste dish while in China I had no choice anyway and in any case, it was highly honored by prominent people, and domestic and foreign tourists.

Peking Duck 北京烤鸭- Chinese Food

Kung Pao Chicken.

Another famous food that I saw friends serving was the Kung Pao Chicken. At least this was famous to me as the main ingredients were dried chili, diced chicken, cucumber, and fried peanuts or cashews. This appeared familiar as we used to call it Chinese takeaways at home and restaurants had created a Western-style Kung Pao chicken where they used to cover the chicken with sweet and sour sauce, cornstarch, and vegetables, and could at times add mashed garlic.

Hot pot

The hot pot was another delicacy. I encountered it when I paid a friend a visit in Chongqing. She told me that this was the most popular dish in China, especially in Sichuan Province and Chongqing. It was cooked in and eaten from a simmering pot of soup stock on a fire source in the middle of the dining table with other foods surrounding the pot. Here, I saw people add and cook whatever they like in the broth. This one didn’t surprise me as I used to see the same in my homeland and this made me develop a sense of belonging to this Chinese food culture. It was a pleasure. In Kenya, hotpot used to appear on tables during ceremonies, the same way here, it was a great way of socializing with friends and relatives. I realized that Chinese people had become very fond of the hot pot as they were using it all year round. We gathered around the pot as we chatted, ate, and drink. It was all fun.

Hot Pot 火锅- Chinese Food

Dim Sum

My existence in China meant endless joy to me. From making friends to exploring Chinese food cultures. It was pleasure after pleasure. Dim sum is another popular Cantonese dish that I learned at an event in Guangdong. Small dishes such as rolls, cakes, meat, seafood, dessert, and vegetable were prepared and I was told it originated in Guangzhou city. Since we had arrived there in the morning, we drank tea with dim sum. This gave us a break from the usual bowl of soy milk sweetened with sugar with fried dough sticks in our school cafeteria. I was informed that there, people like drinking tea in the morning or lunch and so they often eat dim sum during their tea parties for breakfast and lunch. I swore to be preparing it myself as it was very delicious.

Dumplings

During Chinese New Year’s Eve celebrations, I also noted that dumplings were commonly taken. The dumplings were made up of minced meat and/or chopped vegetables enveloped in a thin dough skin. Popular fillings were minced pork, diced shrimp, beef, ground chicken, and vegetables. I saw them fry and the thing that amazed me was a myth that the more dumplings one eats during the New Year celebrations determined the amount of money one makes in that year. This prompted me to eat enough to attract more money. Hahaha. In addition to that, I was told that making dumplings was a good way to interact with one’s friends and relatives, and this arouse a nostalgic feeling in me telling myself that I had to do this as I return home.

Eventually, I found myself loving most Chinese foods as I found them to be almost the same as those cooked in my home country. The most interesting bit is that I learned that their preparations all carried extra myths. When I came back home, it was story after another about the Chinese food culture and many admired this culture and vowed to look for meanings in our local meals. I discovered that I worried for nothing as the meals were all alike except for varied flavors and I could prepare simple meals myself. Till I finished my studies, I embraced all Chinese foods. They are cuisines that one must try while in China as they are just delicious!

When I engaged them, I realized that the majority were scared of the application process. I sat down and pondered what can be done to dispel their fears and aid them achieve their goals. The environment is calm and welcoming to people from all races.

Document Requirements for Scholarship Application

Having made sure that they were knowledgeable of the benefits of studying in China, what remained was making them understand the important documents needed to apply for these scholarships for successful admissions. I understood that different schools had different application forms but the same general information such as personal info, educational & work experience, and parents’ information. This needed experience and so I had to guide them fill as I had done it before. For instance, they needed to start by filling their high school education background upwards. Some universities require that applicants fill in from primary school, bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or doctoral degree if they have, relevant educational experience, or work experience in that order. Also, a student had to describe his/her address in detail bearing in mind that street, city, and country are three important elements. At the end of the application form, I understood their fears about the application part, it wasn’t easy. During my time, my uncles helped me do it successfully. I also had to give them a hand but I was grateful I went first and now I could guide others.

Passport and Criminal Record Requirements

Another requirement that I had to bring into their picture is a photocopy of a valid passport which is necessary for international students to study at Chinese universities. I had to remind them not to forget to check the validity of their passports as many Chinese study-abroad programs are more than a year, so, the student’s passport must be valid for over a year. I had to explain how having valid passports is vital because even if they were going to study for less than a year, additional needs may arise and here valid password becomes handy saving them a lot of trouble. In my case, having a valid passport enabled me to complete my studies and still have time to do part-time jobs before I returned home.

In addition to that, I had to check these students’ certificates and transcripts to ensure that they are clear. This could have been overlooked by many but they later realized that getting the needed admission required that their marks on the sheet fulfill the university requirements as many good scholarships needed over 70% grade with some popular ones even demanding these marks on each subject. I realized that few students I was promoting knew that marks also determined if the admissions will be successful. At that point, others dimmed their hopes but again the already-mentioned associated benefits couldn’t allow them to stop trying.

The Importance of Non-Criminal Record (Police Clearance)

Also, there is this most forgotten document but a vital one-the non-criminal record (police clearance) as it helps the concerned parties to understand the background of the student. I had to help them get this document and explain how it should look, to be acceptable. Because I understood how this could cost me as a promoter, I had to check and ensure that they are in the current year and within the validity period. As a promoter, this document also mattered to me as I had to support students who won’t taint my name afterward.

The Significance of Medical Check

The last but important document that I emphasized is a medical check within 6 months. Again here, I helped them process, prepare them in time and ensure that it is valid. I also ensured that they printed out the foreigner physical examination form and performed a medical check in the hospital. I made sure that all their information in the form was filled correctly without blanks, with address, photo with an official stamp, and doctor’s signature.

Challenges and Responsibilities of a Scholarship Promoter

In a nutshell, my scholarship in China promoter work is not easy. It requires a lot of patience and determination as you need to inspire someone and ensure he/she succeeds no matter what. On another hand, you have to ensure that whoever you are supporting has good intentions. Otherwise, others may act maliciously and tarnish your good name for no good reason. Therefore you are required to always ensure you carefully check the information they give to ensure it is true. But the good news is that many universities ask students to provide bank statements during applications to ensure that students can finish their studies.

I strived hard to gain proficiency in the Chinese language as this was the only way to ensure my survival in China. So during my most memorable semester, I did my HSK I test and afterward HSK II. To my surprise, I passed marvelously and was delighted to be able to communicate in the fundamental Chinese language. I’m grateful to my Chinese instructors as they were exceptionally generous instructors and could guide me with their original capacity and dedication. They ensured that doing my fifth semester, I had finished practically all necessities like coursework, HSK, and SCI distribution prerequisites. The reason why I opted to pursue my higher study from China is not a single one, there are so many reasons. I had chosen China for my higher studies because China is an education-friendly country and promotes higher education in every possible manner without discrimination of race, religion, and gender. It provides qualified experienced faculty, excellent laboratory facilities, and an environment for exceptional research work. My university looked like a city and at any given time it was fully crowded. By then, more than 40000 students were studying there from different regions of China. Honestly, I never felt alone or bored there because of the different activities organized by Chinese students and various organizations. It was a place with people from all over the globe who represented a diversity of cultures. Another reason is that China and Kenya have very good interrelations, so I felt safe and at home.

Chinese Government up to date supports Kenya and being Kenyan, I got a lot of regard and care from the administration. The connection was amazing. With my distinction, I finished my studies there, with a major in Human Resources at the School of Science. I remember being guided by overall quite agreeable instructors who figured out our concerns and offered me great pieces of guidance like my senior relatives. All other educators in the school were very helpful to me and gave me an amicable climate to thrive in China.

Life in China was illuminating. I discovered that China offers the most focused education as compared to any that I ever experienced in my entire studies. They were very time cognizant and had a culture of dependability. They had the highest regard for their separate educators and never whined when a period surpassed or in any event. They could have just a ten-minute break in the middle. I also realized that the Chinese people had an interesting working society; focused, a conciliatory soul of enthusiasm for collective public objectives and finishing projects well early. I once took part in Chinese life due to their exceptional exercises and participated in their sports, workout, recreation center, visits, and parties.

In the first month of my arrival in China, I encountered Chinese drama, and one of my companions cordially invited me to be a member to watch Chinese culture. It was extremely phenomenal and various shows were introduced on the stage. From that day, I chose not to miss any Chinese social movements and celebrations.

Various celebrations are commended by Chinese individuals consistently. Chinese spring celebrations were equally celebrated in the college and we made various decorations, and other food things alongside the action of paper cutting, sending red bundles to one another. Also, one of my Chinese companions invited me to her home for a spring celebration requesting that I meet all her relatives. With the practices and social movements they held, I realized that they spent a lot of money to make Chinese dishes and give red parcels to youngsters. It differed greatly from my Kenyan culture and was indeed adventurous with my new involvement with China. I live to remember the delightful celebrations. Similarly, on the 5th of February Chinese New Year, and New Year’s Eve, I saw the vivid easing up of fireworks, and on the primary day of the New Year, it was a snapshot of joy. To everybody, it meant a blissful New Year in Chinese.

I must say that the experience I got from studying in China gave me a lot of exposure and confidence as I took part in numerous exercises and activities. I always got a chance to explore new things and this enabled me to compose and publish various articles in the various China events. I also attended many scholarly gatherings of Nanjing University College which enriched me a lot in various ways. Likewise, I got engaged in numerous delightful celebrations and exercises coordinated by various groups. Also, I attended various classes to upgrade my article-writing skills which enabled me to get part times jobs in China. Additionally, I took part in social celebrations, life-building gatherings, spring celebrations, and long-distance races which improved my social life a lot. I feel pain when I could not retrieve most of the essential photos I took as they were lost when my homeland house caught fire losing everything.

This is all about my genuine story in China. To wrap things up, China is the best place any person could long to be due to the unending excellent benefits it offers.

Studying abroad is an incredible opportunity for 18 years old me, to learn about new cultures, gain new experiences, and meet people from all around the world. As someone who has studied abroad in China, I can confidently say that this experience has been one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of my life. From the moment I stepped off the plane, knew that studying in China was going to be a unique and unforgettable experience.

One of my favorite aspects of studying abroad in China was the chance to immerse myself in its rich history, culture, and language. From day one, I was surrounded by Chinese characters and the distinct sounds of the Chinese language. At first, it was intimidating, but as I began to learn more and more about the language and culture, it became richly rewarding. Learning about the nuances of Chinese customs, traditions, and beliefs through my interactions with locals and with other students from all over the world was truly enriching.

Another highlight of my study abroad experience was the opportunity to explore China’s beautiful and diverse landscape. From the towering mountains in the north to the sandy beaches in the south, I was continually in awe of the breathtaking scenery. Some of my fondest memories are of hiking along the Great Wall of China, visiting the magnificent Terracotta Warriors in Xian, and exploring the bustling streets of Shanghai.

Of course, my study abroad experience in China was not all sunshine and roses. There were challenges along the way, including language barriers, cultural differences, and homesickness.

As medical student waking up everyday at 6am to prepare going to the university on time and also the long lectures and labs some time I will be done at 4pm and some time at 9 pm, and I had to go back and to revise what l learnt through the day with a lot of drinking coffee, studying in café and in university library and repeat that all over again on the next day

However, these challenges were ultimately what made the experience so rewarding and meaningful. Stepping out of my comfort zone taught me more about myself and helped me grow and become more independent.

Lastly, studying abroad in China was an opportunity to make lifelong friendships with people from all over the world. Whether it was bonding over a shared love of Sichuan cuisine, trying to navigate the Beijing subway system, or simply chatting about our experiences, the friends I made during my study abroad experience have remained some of my closest friends to this day.

Overall, my study abroad experience in China was and is one of the most memorable and life-changing experiences I have ever had. Culturally, the two countries also differ significantly. China has a rich history and culture, with many ancient traditions still practiced today. Saudi Arabia is known for its conservative Islamic culture, with strict dress codes and gender segregation being common.

Overall, while both China and Saudi Arabia are important players on the world stage, they are very different in terms economies, food and cultures.
In terms of food, China and Saudi Arabia have distinct culinary traditions. China is known for its diverse and flavorful cuisine, with a wide variety of regional specialties, such as Sichuan cuisine, Cantonese cuisine, and Hunan cuisine. Chinese cuisine often features rice, noodles, vegetables, and meats, and is characterized by its use of spices and seasonings.

On the other hand, Saudi Arabian cuisine is heavily influenced by Arabic, African, and Indian cuisines, and often includes rice, lamb, chicken, and spices such as saffron, cinnamon, and cardamom. Traditional dishes include kabsa, machboos, and mutabbaq.

when I first arrived in China with my dad the hardest part was for us was the food. but thankfully when I met my roommate, she was already familiar with hala food and where to find it so it was little bit easy for me, there are still plenty of places to find halal and vegetarian dishes throughout the country. .in China so I recommend to ask and search for the options in map and ask help friends.

For halal food, you may want to focus on cities with a significant Muslim population, such as Xi’an, Lanzhou, and Yinchuan. These cities are home to the Hui ethnic group, who are predominantly Muslim and known for their delicious halal cuisine. You can find numerous halal restaurants and street vendors in these areas, serving dishes like Lanzhou beef noodles, lamb skewers, and Hui-style dumplings.

In larger cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, halal restaurants can be found in various neighborhoods, particularly around mosques. You can usually identify these establishments by looking for the Arabic script and a sign with a halal certification. Be sure to try some of the local specialties, such as Beijing-style lamb hot pot or Shanghai-style fried beef noodles.

For vegetarians, China offers a variety of meat-free dishes that are both delicious and satisfying. Traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine, known as Su Shi (素食), can be found in many cities across the country. The dishes are often prepared with tofu, mushrooms, and other plant-based ingredients, and are known for their delicate flavors and artful presentation. You can find Buddhist vegetarian restaurants near temples or in areas with a strong Buddhist presence.

Additionally, most Chinese restaurants offer several vegetarian dishes on their menus, such as tofu dishes, vegetable stir-fries, and rice or noodle dishes. Look for dishes like Mapo Tofu, eggplant with garlic sauce, and sautéed string beans. Be sure to specify that you do not want any meat or animal-based products in your dish, as some restaurants may use meat-based broths or sauces.

For example, you can say “Wǒ chī sù” (我吃素) to indicate that you are vegetarian, or “Wǒ chī qīngzhēn” (我吃清真) for halal food. With a little effort and research, you will be able to enjoy a wide variety of delicious and satisfying halal and vegetarian dishes during your stay in China.
